Partnership Goals
Fueled by its vision for innovation, security, and cost-efficiency, Avo embraced Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its cloud platform. However, their journey wasn’t without its challenges. Overprovisioning, underutilized resources, and unmanaged cloud storage led to inefficient spending and higher-than-anticipated cloud costs.
We knew there were savings to be found in our cloud, but Profisea unearthed a goldmine. That extra 78% reduction on cloud bills per month is like finding a brand-new budget line dedicated to innovation and growth.
Recognizing the need for optimization, Avo cooperated with Profisea, an AWS Advanced Tier Services partner, to establish the necessary infrastructure changes on AWS, focusing on DevOps and FinOps services to:
- Rightsize resources by matching instance types and sizes to actual needs,
- Eliminate unused resources by terminating or detaching unused resources,
- Choose the resource types offering the best price-performance ratio,
- Manage cloud storage effectively by implementing lifecycle policies to archive or delete older data, close unused accounts to reduce costs, and
- Adopt FinOps practices for continuous cloud cost optimization.
Achieving the Goals
Drawing on their DevOps and FinOps expertise, Profisea embarked on the following six-step journey to transform Avo’s cloud infrastructure:
Step 1: Data-Driven Insights. Profisea kicked off the project by leveraging AWS Cost Explorer and Uniskai to gain insights into Avo’s cloud spending. Engineers analyzed cost patterns, pinpointed areas of high expenditure, and unraveled the underlying cost drivers (resource usage, pricing models, etc.).
Step 2: Prioritizing Impactful Actions. With a clear understanding of Avo’s cloud infrastructure, Profisea prioritized optimization opportunities according to their potential impact and ease of implementation. Profisea’s FinOps experts strategically selected actions with the highest cost-saving potential so as to enhance rather than detract from performance.
Step 3: Rightsizing. Profisea’s DevOps engineers rightsized resources across both production and stage environments. Actions such as dropping unnecessary RDS read replicas, shrinking EKS and RDS instances, and replacing ElasticCache with Redis delivered immediate cost savings. Simultaneously, Profisea identified and eliminated unused resources such as Elastic IPs, unattached volumes, and obsolete S3 backups.
Step 4: Choosing the Right Tools. Profisea implemented Spot instances for EC2 and Terraform agents, capitalizing on their dynamic pricing model for significant cost reductions. Additionally, Profisea’s DevOps experts established lifecycle policies for cloud storage, consolidated unused AWS accounts and streamlined Avo’s cloud footprint to eliminate redundant billing charges.
Step 5: Continuous Monitoring and Improvement. Profisea implemented a robust monitoring system to track cloud costs and measure the impact of cloud actions. This continuous monitoring allows Avo to identify new optimization opportunities and adapt business strategies as its cloud needs evolve.
